Bangkok Layovers

Quite a number of our tours are best reached by flights that connect through Bangkok. And while our customers from Europe, Australia and New Zealand can connect straight through usually, our friends from North America often find themselves spending the night in Bangkok. While Bangkok is a vibrant, interesting city, if you have an early morning connecting flight it is too far to travel all the way downtown simply to sleep.

Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, located a ways out from the city, now offers a variety of overnight accommodation options. Ranging from your typical overpriced on airport hotel to small, friendly lodges.

Lodging At Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport

Novotel Suvarnabhumi Hotel
The Novotel is on the airport grounds, just a short distance from the terminal, with regular shuttles running back and forth. It is a typical Novotel, first class western style hotel, with prices running $150 on up.

Lodging Near Suvarnabhumi Airport

Nearby the airport, a number of small hotels are popping up like mushrooms as the Thai entrepreneurial spirit rises to the occasion. The lodges we list below are all ones that member of Team Pedalers have stayed at. They are all well kept with friendly staff, shuttle service to the airport and breakfast. A couple have restaurants for dinner, the others you would need to stroll to a nearby restaurant.

Silver Gold Garden
The Silver Gold Garden hotel is a new hotel nearby the airport, located in the small town of Lat Krabang. It is a moderate class hotel, with prices starting at $25 on up and complimentary airport shuttles. Of the four nearby hotels listed here, this one has the best location, being on the main street with nearby dining and shopping options. The next three hotels listed are off the main road down small side streets.

Floral Shire Hotel
Floral Shire is another new hotel that sits just off of the airport grounds, maybe 10 minutes by car from the terminal. It is a moderate class hotel, with prices starting around $35 on up. Airport shuttle available. Please note: the deluxe rooms with lofts do not have curtains on the skylight windows, so sunlight floods in first thing in the morning.

Convenient Resort
The Convenient Resort (good name ;-) ) is also a new hotel right at the edge of the airport property, about 5 minutes away. It is a simple hotel, with prices starting at $25 on up. Airport shuttle available at extra cost.

Queen’s Garden Resort at Riverview
Queens Garden Resort at Riverview was the first off airport hotel to open near Suvarnabhumi. Flamboyant name, but simple rooms, clean and friendly, with prices starting at $25. Airport shuttle available (free one way, 100 baht the other way).

Keeping up with the Joneses

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So we here at Pedalers should be quite flattered by the news coming from our competition.

Recently one of our major competitors announced a bold new concept, “more miles, less money”. They are creating some new trips offering longer daily rides of up to 60 or 70 miles (100 – 120 kms) and a cost of less than $2000 for a six day tour. Great … but sounds awfully similar to what we have been offering for years (7 days in Thailand at $1575 with deluxe hotels). Also gives one a reason to pause for a moment and wonder, if they are still providing the same quality tour, how much profit were they making on the former easier trips ??

Another bike touring company announced they were going “green”, by putting all their tour details online and not printing a paper catalog … been there done that almost ten years ago.

It is always good to see some of our concepts adopted by others in the industry. Team Pedalers has always been on the leading edge when it comes to running tours, imaginative routing and sustainable practices long before they became trendy. It’s nice to be the Joneses.

plog ???

Here at Pedalers we’re ploggin’, not blogging. The term blog originated from web logs, which suffered from electronic minimalization to become (we)blogs. Here in the Biergarten guests will be posting their Trip Logs or . . . yes . . . you guessed it . . . (tri)plogs.
